Our story
Built around drivers, not around a timetable
ESH’S Truck Driving School exists because getting a heavy vehicle licence is usually a means to an end, and that end is work.
Most people who call us are changing direction. They are leaving a trade, coming off the tools, arriving from overseas with a licence that doesn’t carry over, or moving up a class because the job they want requires it. Very few are learning to drive for the pleasure of it. They have a deadline, a family, a shift roster, and often a job offer that depends on holding the right licence by a certain date.
So the school is built around that. Lessons are one-on-one. Times run from early morning to late evening, seven days a week. And we tell you honestly where you stand, because a driver who sits an assessment before they are ready has lost money and time, and we would rather lose a booking than do that to someone.

Four things we hold to
The vehicle you will be assessed in
Training in a different class or transmission to the one you sit the assessment in wastes lessons. We match them from the start, and we will tell you if what you have asked for is the wrong fit.
Safety before speed
Load awareness, blind spots, braking distance, coupling and uncoupling, and what a heavy vehicle does in the wet. These are the parts of the job that matter long after the assessment is over.
Straight answers about money
You will be told what a course costs and what is included before you book. If we think you need more hours than you have paid for, you will hear it early, not on the day.
Your first lesson
What actually happens on day one
Nobody is thrown into traffic in a prime mover on their first morning. Here is the shape of it.

A walk around the vehicle
Pre-start checks, what you are looking for and why. This is part of the assessment as well as the job.

Getting set up in the seat
Seat, mirrors, controls, and how the vehicle differs from what you drive now. Longer than you would expect, and worth it.

Low-speed manoeuvring
Somewhere quiet. Moving off, stopping, turning and reversing until the size of the thing stops being alarming.

An honest read on where you are
At the end we tell you what you are already good at, what needs work, and roughly how much of it.
