Every licence we train

Seven courses, from a first driving lesson to a multi-combination ticket. Each one below explains what it lets you drive, who it suits and what the training covers.

Heavy vehicle classes are a progression — you generally need to have held the class below for a set period before moving up. What applies to you depends on your licence history, so use this as a map and let us confirm the detail.

Car Licence — Class C

A car licence covers cars, utes and vans up to 4.5 tonnes. It is where most drivers start, and it is the foundation every heavy vehicle class is built on.

We take complete beginners as well as drivers who have held a learner permit for a while and want to be assessment-ready. Both automatic and manual are available, and we are used to nervous drivers — there is no rush and no audience.

What the training covers

  • Controls, moving off, steering and braking from scratch
  • Traffic, roundabouts, merging and lane discipline
  • Parking, three-point turns and hill starts
  • Mock driving test and test-route practice
  • Support for drivers converting an overseas licence
LR

Light Rigid

Light Rigid covers a single vehicle over 4.5 tonnes and up to 8 tonnes, including small buses in that range. It is the usual first step off a car licence and into commercial driving.

It suits delivery work, small tippers, community and courtesy buses, and anyone who wants to test whether heavy vehicle work is for them before committing to a bigger class.

Prerequisites: you will generally need to have held a car licence for a set period first. We will confirm exactly what applies to you before you book.

What the training covers

  • Pre-start and walk-around checks
  • Judging the size and swing of a larger vehicle
  • Reversing, kerbside positioning and tight turns
  • Load awareness and braking distance
  • Assessment-route familiarisation
HR

Heavy Rigid

Heavy Rigid covers rigid vehicles with three or more axles — tippers, agitators, larger buses, tankers and heavy service vehicles — and lets you tow a light trailer.

It is the class most civil, construction and waste operators ask for, and it is the gateway to both HC and the direct MC upgrade.

Prerequisites: a minimum period holding the class below applies. Tell us what you hold and when you got it and we will check it for you.

What the training covers

  • Gear work, including range and splitter patterns
  • Multi-axle reversing and blind-side awareness
  • Air brake systems and safe operation
  • Load restraint and mass limits in plain terms
  • Road craft on the routes used in assessments
HC

Heavy Combination

Heavy Combination covers a prime mover towing a single semi-trailer, or a rigid truck towing a heavy trailer. This is where articulation enters the picture and the vehicle stops behaving like one solid object.

It suits linehaul, container and general freight work, and it is the standard step between HR and MC.

What the training covers

  • Coupling and uncoupling, done until it is automatic
  • Trailer swing, cut-in and off-tracking through turns
  • Reversing a trailer, straight and around a corner
  • Braking a combination safely, including in the wet
  • Coupling checks as an assessor will want to see them
MC

Multi Combination

Multi Combination covers B-doubles and road trains — the top of the licence ladder, and where most long-haul and bulk freight work sits.

It is a serious step up in length, mass and planning. Most of the skill is in reading the road far enough ahead that you never need a sudden input.

What the training covers

  • Managing two trailers through turns and roundabouts
  • Coupling a B-double set and a converter dolly
  • Reversing a multi-combination unit
  • Route planning, mass limits and permitted roads
  • Fatigue management and long-distance discipline
HR→MC

HR to MC Upgrade

A dedicated fast-track for drivers who hold HR and want to reach multi-combination without stopping at HC along the way. It is a distinct pathway, not a shortened MC course.

It suits experienced rigid drivers moving into linehaul, and operators who need a driver ticketed for B-doubles sooner than the usual path allows.

Eligibility depends on your licence history. There are rules about how long you must have held HR and what else you need in place. Call us with your details and we will tell you straight away whether this route is open to you.

What the training covers

  • Everything the HC step would have taught, condensed
  • Coupling from single trailer through to a full B-double set
  • Multi-combination reversing and manoeuvring
  • Assessment preparation for the MC standard

Bus Driver Authority

A Bus Driver Authority is not a licence class. It is a separate accreditation that sits alongside your licence and allows you to drive a bus commercially — route, charter or school work.

You hold the licence class for the size of bus you will drive, and the authority on top of it. We help with both sides.

What we help with

  • Working out which licence class the role needs
  • Understanding the application and what it asks for
  • Driver training in the relevant class
  • Preparing for assessment in a bus rather than a truck

Before you book

Two things worth knowing

Work backwards from the vehicle. If you know the make and configuration of what you will be driving — or you have a job ad in front of you — read it to us and we will tell you the class it needs. Guessing high wastes money; guessing low wastes a course.

Each heavy vehicle class has a minimum period you must have held the class below it, and provisional licences are treated differently to full ones. Because it depends on your individual history, we check it for you rather than publishing a rule that might not be yours. Tell us what you hold and the date you got it.
